May 2nd King Phill & X The Artist will be revealing their collaborative project “The EP: Soundtrack to Creativity”. Menswear blogger and photographer Phillip “King Phill” Loken chose 5 of his favorite, most life-altering albums from his extensive iTunes library of at least 17 days’ worth of music. He then photographed each in a setting he felt embodied that specific album. For the collaborative aspect, X The Artist created his own version of each of the album’s covers with his organized chaos, mixed media approach to fine art. Phill & X bring to you an entire musical experience in the form of an unforgettable 10 piece exhibition. Music videos from each of the albums will be shown via projection and a DJ will be playing songs from the albums to elevate the experience to an even further level. The exhibition will take place on May’s first Friday in premier clothing boutique Civic Threads in Downtown Greensboro (527 South Elm Street). This is Phill’s first exhibition, so let him know what you think of what you see. There will also be a raffle for a print of one of X’s pieces! Make a donation of canned foods, clothing or toiletries to be entered in the raffle; all donations will be given to The Greensboro Urban Ministry. In addition to all the other awesomeness that will be taking place, you can remember the night by stopping by photographer C. Jefferson’s photobooth; make sure you get a picture before you leave! Light refreshments will be available for all.

* All exhibited pieces will be available for purchase

About The Artists:

X The Artist
Laced with Hip Hop aesthetics, X The Artist creates work that dares to speak to the best and worst of our world. X cites his mixed media/collage style as a strategic approach to critical social analysis. It is, if nothing else, a manifesto that acknowledges the role of the artist in the 21st century. But don’t let this intelligent engagement with creativity intimidate you. The Brooklyn native creates art for all and his talent has garnered him commissions from some of Hip Hop’s notables including Swizz Beats, Big K.R.I.T, Curren$y, Jim Jones, and Free from 106&Park. X the artist pushes boundaries drawing inspiration from everyday materials, scenes, news reports, and music. Each piece, a collage of oils, acrylics, found objects such as cans and even dollar bills, represents what the artist refers to as “organized chaos.” Inspired by his great- grandmother Martha Jane Pettway (famous Quilter), she is known as a woman before her time, X The Artist treats the creation process the way he says Martha Jane Pettway treated her life- with style and grace. X The Artist currently resides in Downtown Greensboro, N.C. where his work is on display at his own art gallery Gentleman’s Court.

Phillip “King Phill” Loken
Phillip is a 20-year-old Business Studies major at UNCG. He runs a menswear fashion blog called Cool&Well-Dressed where he writes editorials on and interviews clothing brands. He developed an interest in photography from the need of original images for his blog. He prefers to be called an artist rather than a photographer because photography is just his current medium of creativity and he feels he hasn’t reached the level of mastery to deserve the title. A story on Phillip was recently featured on UNCG's Homepage (here)
